New applications for Orasol dyes

Abstract

Conservators at the American Museum of Natural History have been using Orasol and related metal-complex solvent dye solutions as unbound colorants for cases in which the use of a pigment-binder system would impede retreatment or present other issues. These solutions can be airbrushed or brushed onto keratin or other substrates, a technique developed during recent diorama restorations at the American Museum of Natural History. This tip talk discusses some of the considerations for their use, application techniques, and the possibilities for removal when utilizing Orasol dyes in this manner.
