Image 1: Object conservator Amy Byrne used a mixture of ethanol and water to lightly remove centuries of grime and debris from the exposed wax bodies of each figure. Once cleaned, tool marks used to further shape and sculpt the wax were visible for the first time. Cleaning and examination of the leg revealed Fraunces’ application of a darker resin to adhere and strengthen the joint between the hollow leg to the figure’s torso.
