I had to wear a hard hat. They were working on the sky, and they gave me a brush and some paint and said, \u2018Please.\u2019 I said, \u2018I can\u2019t touch Giotto\u2019s painting.\u2019 They said, \u2018It\u2019s watercolor.\u2019 I said, \u2018I\u2019m so sorry, Giotto. It\u2019s not my fault\u2026\u2019\u201d Not having heard at the time of this conservation encounter, I checked the contemporary news accounts and saw photos of Smith brush and palette in hand. Smith was sincere in her trepidation about\u00a0touching the work and this sounds like it was done to gain publicity for the project.
