{"id":13683,"date":"2015-12-14T09:33:09","date_gmt":"2015-12-14T14:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.conservators-converse.org\/?p=13683"},"modified":"2015-12-14T09:33:09","modified_gmt":"2015-12-14T14:33:09","slug":"2016-research-experiences-for-undergraduates-in-archaeological-and-museum-conservation-science-at-the-smithsonians-museum-conservation-institute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resources.culturalheritage.org\/conservators-converse\/2015\/12\/14\/2016-research-experiences-for-undergraduates-in-archaeological-and-museum-conservation-science-at-the-smithsonians-museum-conservation-institute\/","title":{"rendered":"2016 Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Archaeological and Museum Conservation Science at the Smithsonian&#039;s Museum Conservation Institute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2016 Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Archaeological and Museum Conservation Science at the Smithsonian&#8217;s Museum Conservation Institute<br \/>\nSupported by NSF REU Sites Program<br \/>\nMCI is accepting applications for 2016, contingent on continued funding<br \/>\nApplication deadline is February 25, 2016<br \/>\nThe Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute in conjunction with the NSF REU Sites Program is offering short-term opportunities for undergraduates to work on research projects with staff members of its technical studies and research group, contingent on continued funding. \u00a0The Smithsonian\u2019s Museum Conservation Institute (MCI) is the center for specialized technical collections research and conservation for all Smithsonian museums, collections, and research centers.\u00a0 MCI combines state-of-the-art instrumentation and scientific techniques to provide technical research and characterization of objects.<br \/>\nInternships will take place during the summer.\u00a0 Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate in a university program or scheduled to matriculate in the fall term following the internship. \u00a0Acceptable majors include, but are not limited to: \u00a0museum studies, art history, archaeology, paleontology, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, ecology, earth science, chemical engineering, and materials science engineering.\u00a0 Basic chemistry and mathematical coursework is preferred; laboratory experience is not required.\u00a0 Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.\u00a0 A stipend will be offered for a period of 10 weeks starting in late May or early June.<br \/>\nProjects will be supervised by one of the following staff members in their specific project area.\u00a0 Applicants are strongly urged to contact potential advisors in advance of application.\u00a0 Students are also welcomed to propose projects of their choosing contingent upon agreement of a staff member to advise the project.<br \/>\nJanet Douglas, Head of Technical Studies, 301-238-1238, <a href=\"mailto:douglja@si.edu\">douglja@si.edu<\/a><br \/>\nMaterials, technology, and provenance studies of museum collections;
