The individual in this position will also be\u00a0responsible for the management of conservation programs, facilities, and\u00a0staff, as well as the examination, documentation, and treatment of objects\u00a0and specimens in the Museum collections. The Chief Conservator will report\u00a0to and strongly collaborate with the Head of Anthropology Collections and\u00a0will consult with the appropriate Collections Administrative Teams. The\u00a0Chief Conservator will initiate and support awareness and fundraising\u00a0efforts for collection preservation and the Museum mission.<br \/>\n<strong>Duties and Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spearheads production and implementation of long range collection\u00a0conservation planning. Develops and implements collections policies and\u00a0procedures in collaboration with curators, collection managers, and\u00a0registrars.<\/li>\n<li>Surveys collections in collaboration with curators and collection\u00a0managers to assess the condition of objects and specimens and determine\u00a0preservation and treatment needs<\/li>\n<li>Documents, examines, and performs conservation treatments and\u00a0procedures on objects and specimens in the collections.<\/li>\n<li>Provides conservation guidance to Collections, Exhibits, and other museum staff to establish, monitor, and maintain proper environmental\u00a0conditions in storerooms, exhibits, and work areas as well as to prescribe, review, and upgrade methods and materials used for the storage and packing\u00a0of objects and specimens<\/li>\n<li>Coordinates exhibition conservation program. May perform conservation work for incoming, outgoing, and in-house exhibits including conditioning\u00a0and overseeing installation<\/li>\n<li>Assesses, recommends, and provides treatment of objects and specimens\u00a0for outgoing loans to borrowing institutions for exhibitions and research. Provides guidance on exhibition mounts. May travel as courier to borrowing\u00a0institutions to condition report and oversee installations and\u00a0de-installations<\/li>\n<li>Prepares conservation funding proposals<\/li>\n<li>Performs research leading to improved methods, materials, and\u00a0procedures for conservation, storage, and exhibit of specimens;\u00a0disseminates results in publications and oral presentations<\/li>\n<li>Participates in professional meetings, workshops, and other activities\u00a0to keep current in the field of conservation and enhance professional\u00a0knowledge and skills<\/li>\n<li>Conducts tours and public presentations when needed<\/li>\n<li>Supervises and manages all conservation staff as well as volunteers,<br \/>\ninterns, and visitors as required<\/li>\n<li>Responsible for managing the daily operation of the conservation<br \/>\nlaboratories including the organization, maintenance and ordering of\u00a0equipment and supplies<\/li>\n<li>Performs other conservation and collections-related activities as<br \/>\nassigned<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Degree in conservation from a recognized training program with a\u00a0specialization in objects and ethnographic conservation<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated extensive conservation experience with management and\u00a0supervisory responsibilities<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated working knowledge and practice of conservation ethics,\u00a0theory, method, and literature<\/li>\n<li>Working knowledge of lab equipment and chemicals<\/li>\n<li>Strong manual skills and attention to detail<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated superb organizational skills<\/li>\n<li>Proven verbal and written communication skills<\/li>\n<li>Conservation grant writing experience<\/li>\n<li>Leadership and interpersonal skills<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team,\u00a0to enlist the cooperation and involvement of others<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated experience in mentoring conservators, students, and<br \/>\nvolunteers<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated experience in collection care policy, planning, and<br \/>\nimplementation<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated experience in resource and project management<\/li>\n<li>Skilled in negotiation and resolution of non-routine problems<\/li>\n<li>Proven experience with standard digital conservation photography as\u00a0well as computer proficiency with museum collections databases, Microsoft\u00a0Word, and Microsoft Excel.
