{"id":16575,"date":"2017-03-06T10:55:45","date_gmt":"2017-03-06T15:55:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.conservators-converse.org\/?p=16575"},"modified":"2017-03-06T10:55:45","modified_gmt":"2017-03-06T15:55:45","slug":"i-think-it-has-something-to-do-with-preserving-authenticity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resources.culturalheritage.org\/conservators-converse\/2017\/03\/06\/i-think-it-has-something-to-do-with-preserving-authenticity\/","title":{"rendered":"I think it has something to do with preserving authenticity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to Randy Kennedy writing in the Saturday March 4, 2017 issue of The New York Times (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/03\/03\/arts\/morgan-library-book-smell.html?_r=0\">\u201cTrying to Pin Down The Smell of History&#8221;<\/a>), Jorge Otero-Pailos, director of historic preservation studies at Columbia University and his students are working with Christine Nelson, a curator of manuscripts at the Morgan Library and Carlos Benaim, a master perfumer at International Flavor and Fragrances to sample the molecules \u201coff gassed\u201d  from the objects in the rooms of the Morgan Library  &amp; Museum buildings in order to characterize the smell profile of each. While there are no plans to create a \u201cMorgan Library scent\u201d, it is not inconceivable that one day scent may be used to enhance the visitor experience. I know that this project has a connection to the conservation of physical objects. I\u2019m struggling with how to articulate that connection.
