{"id":18128,"date":"2017-12-26T22:29:07","date_gmt":"2017-12-27T03:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.conservators-converse.org\/?p=18128"},"modified":"2017-12-26T22:29:07","modified_gmt":"2017-12-27T03:29:07","slug":"it-will-be-a-victory-for-public-participation-in-decision-making-about-the-preservation-of-public-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resources.culturalheritage.org\/conservators-converse\/2017\/12\/26\/it-will-be-a-victory-for-public-participation-in-decision-making-about-the-preservation-of-public-art\/","title":{"rendered":"It will be a victory for public participation in decision making about the preservation of public art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As someone who is involved in an ongoing study of people\u2019s reactions to, and feelings of ownership of, the public art in their neighborhood, I was pleased to read in Colin Moynihan\u2019s article in the December 18, 2017 issue of The New York Times (\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/12\/17\/nyregion\/spirit-of-harlem-mural.html\">Newcomer\u2019s Bricks Conceal Colorful Harlem Mural, to Leaders\u2019 Dismay<\/a>\u201d ),  that when a Footaction store covered over with a brick wall  \u201cSpirit of Harlem\u201d, a mosaic on a building on the corner of 125th Street and Frederick Douglas Boulevard in Harlem, there was an outcry  by the residents of the neighborhood, a petition to reverse this action, and a statement by the company that it would remove the wall.
