Two teams of FAIC’s National Heritage Responders are wrapping up a week of work\u00a0in Puerto Rico. This is the second wave of team members to visit collections on the island\u00a0affected by Hurricane Maria.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mold growth\u00a0continued\u00a0to be the primary issue facing most of the institutions visited. With such lengthy power outages, many collections faced exposure to extremely high temperatures and relative humidity. Even\u00a0as\u00a0power is restored for some\u00a0institutions, assessing any\u00a0incursions of\u00a0mold remained a priority task.\u00a0Team\u00a0members continued to stress the importance of personal protective equipment for staff members working with collections, providing guidance on how to safely address the mold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While site visits made up the bulk of the work completed by the teams, one group held a workshop for local artists and institutions on salvaging works. The\u00a0Museo de las Am\u00e9ricas, a museum in San Juan\u00a0visited by the first deployment team in late November, graciously offered their space to host the workshop. Over thirty individuals attended to learn about how to handle their affected objects.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
