The number and variety of web-based media platforms available is impressive (and somewhat daunting), but as outreach tools they have helped many conservators increase their visibility. To select the right tool (or tools) it helps to understand what each platform has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>Basic tools \u2013 How are they different? What do they offer?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Websites<\/span> are static, online resources for in-depth information. They can be constructed easily without code using programs like Adobe Dreamweaver and SiteMaker. Check out: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/devnet\/dreamweaver.html\">http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/devnet\/dreamweaver.html<\/a> , <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sitemakerlive.com\/en\/index.htm\">http:\/\/www.sitemakerlive.com\/en\/index.htm<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Blogs<\/span> function like online journals, and can feature real-time updates, journal-style entries and editorials. Blogs allow for sharing (images, URL links) and the ability to \u201cfollow\u201d other blogs. Popular platforms include Blogger, WordPress, and Tumblr. Check out: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\/\">www.blogger.com<\/a>\u00a0, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordpress.org\/\">www.wordpress.org<\/a>\u00a0, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tumblr.com\/\">www.tumblr.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Social and professional networks<\/span>\u00a0 are online communication platforms based on user profiles. They can feature \u201cfeeds\u201d of real-time updates, messaging, networking and sharing (images, URL links). Popular platforms include Facebook, Google +, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. Check out: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/<\/a>\u00a0, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/plus.google.com\">plus.google.com<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/\">http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/<\/a>\u00a0, <a href=\"http:\/\/pinterest.com\/\">http:\/\/pinterest.com\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Twitter<\/span> is a message-based social media platform built on live, 140-character \u201cfeeds\u201d of real-time updates, and allows users to \u2018follow\u2019 other Twitter users. Check out: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Consider linking your social media pages to draw your target audience to your primary information platform. For example, ECPN officers often copy the URL of new ECPN blog entries and post them on the ECPN Facebook page\u2019s wall.
