{"id":4303,"date":"2010-10-06T12:49:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-06T17:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.conservators-converse.org\/2010\/10\/characterization-of-silver-gelatin-photographs-conference\/"},"modified":"2010-10-06T12:49:00","modified_gmt":"2010-10-06T17:49:00","slug":"characterization-of-silver-gelatin-photographs-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resources.culturalheritage.org\/conservators-converse\/2010\/10\/06\/characterization-of-silver-gelatin-photographs-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Characterization of Silver Gelatin Photographs&#8221; Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\" style=\"font-family:lucida grande\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">On September 30-October 1, 2010, The Foundation of the  American Institute for Conservation of Historic &amp; Artistic Works and  The New York Public Library presented the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.conservation-us.org\/index.cfm?fuseaction=Page.ViewPage&amp;PageID=1082\">\u201cCharacterization of Silver  Gelatin Photographs\u201d conference<\/a> at The New York Public Library.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"font-family:lucida grande\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">According to the AIC, this conference was intended to  present the body of knowledge currently available on the subject of  characterizing silver gelatin developed-out photographs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>Attendees heard from a range of  professionals, including conservators, curators, manufacturers, and  artists. Highlights included a presentation on Paul Messier\u2019s vast  and growing <a href=\"http:\/\/paulmessier.com\/pm\/collection.html\">collection of photographic papers<\/a>, including their wonderful  packaging, from the late 19th century to the present day, as well as a  general <a href=\"http:\/\/notesonphotographs.eastmanhouse.org\/index.php?title=Messier,_Paul._20th_Century_Black_and_White_Papers\">history of papers<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>Artists  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gagosian.com\/artists\/vera-lutter\/\">Vera Lutter<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alisonrossiter.com\/\">Alison Rossiter<\/a> discussed their contemporary chemical  photography work, in terms of their process and their use of the silver  gelatin process.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>Anne  Cartier-Bresson spoke about characterization of silver gelatin prints  using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.henricartierbresson.org\/index_en.htm\">Henri Cartier-Bresson<\/a>\u2019s work to illustrate key points.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>Day 1 concluded with an overview  of current research at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imagepermanenceinstitute.org\/\">Image Permanence Institute<\/a> (IPI), and a panel  discussion on connoisseurship and the marketplace.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"font-family:lucida grande\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">From industry, Howard Hopwood, Chairman of Harman  Technology, producer of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilfordphoto.com\/home.asp\">Ilford<\/a> products, spoke about the tradition and  future of silver halide technology.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">   <\/span>Kit Funderburk, formerly a senior technical manager at Kodak,  discussed the manufacturing history of Kodak papers and, in a second  talk on Day 2, indicated the ways in which paper characteristics could  be used to help date papers and prints.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>A <a href=\"http:\/\/notesonphotographs.eastmanhouse.org\/images\/c\/cb\/Guide_to_Surface_Characteristics_FINAL.pdf\">complete PDF of his book<\/a> on the  subject can be downloaded free, or view the separate chapters <a href=\"http:\/\/notesonphotographs.eastmanhouse.org\/index.php?title=Funderburk,_Kit._A_Guide_to_the_Surface_Characteristics:_Kodak_Fiber_Based_Black_and_White_Papers._%28Second_edition%29\">here<\/a>, on  the George Eastman House \u201cNotes on Photographs\u201d website. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><\/span><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"font-family:verdana\"><span style=\"font-size:100%\">On Day 2, there were a series of technical talks, with two  sessions on using XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectrometry) to analyze  photographs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>One provided an  overview of the history and status of the application of XRF, and the  other dealt with the specific case of a set of stabilized prints.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>There were two sessions covering  characterization projects at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moma.org\/explore\/collection\/conservation\/index\">MoMA<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>One  focused on how chemometrics can help categorize papers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>In the other, Lee Ann Daffner  discussed MoMA\u2019s ongoing characterization of the Thomas Walther  Collection of photographs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>MoMA  is working with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.c-h-i.org\/technology\/ptm\/ptm.html#overview\">Cultural Heritage Imaging<\/a> to use RTI\/PTM to study  the collection.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>MoMA\u2019s  camera array and its associated software create a composite image from  multiple images of a single photograph, enabling a full \u201cvirtual\u201d  examination of the photograph.
