{"id":4363,"date":"2011-09-25T15:02:00","date_gmt":"2011-09-25T20:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.conservators-converse.org\/2011\/09\/art-conservation-training-programs-outside-the-usa\/"},"modified":"2011-09-25T15:02:00","modified_gmt":"2011-09-25T20:02:00","slug":"art-conservation-training-programs-outside-the-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resources.culturalheritage.org\/conservators-converse\/2011\/09\/25\/art-conservation-training-programs-outside-the-usa\/","title":{"rendered":"Art Conservation Training Programs Outside the USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\">Talk to anyone in the profession, and you may hear that a lot has changed in the art conservation field.<span>  <\/span>In the past, conservators often toiled behind the scenes, but in recent years conservation has become a much more visible profession.<span>  <\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\">Today, some museums have conservation labs open to public view.<span>  <\/span>Many institutions and private conservators use social media to get the word out about their work, and exhibitions and the accompanying catalogues often feature the contributions and perspectives of conservators.<span>  <\/span>As a result, more and more people discover conservation, making entry into an academic training program more competitive than ever.<\/p>\n<p><span>  <\/span><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\">As a prospective student in the US, one way to expand your ideas about your future in the profession might be to consider undergraduate or graduate study outside of the United States and Canada.<span>  <\/span>If you have the flexibility and desire to explore another country and culture, one of these programs might be for you.<span>  <\/span>Some of them offer training in specialties that might mesh with your specific interests and experience, enabling you to make a strong application.<span>  <\/span>(Anyone interested in building and conserving clocks?<span>  <\/span>Set your sights on West Dean!)<span>  <\/span>These programs are often just as competitive as those in the US, if not more so (The Courtauld Institute program accepts eight students once every three years).<span>  <\/span>However, some have a stated interest in receiving applications from candidates outside the country.<span>  <\/span>Perhaps your experiences will bring diversity to the composition of an incoming class, strengthening your application in that way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\">If you are not aware of it, <span style=\"font-weight: bold\">Queen\u2019s University<\/span> in Kingston (Ontario, Canada) has a highly respected graduate program:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.queensu.ca\/art\/artconservation.html\">http:\/\/www.queensu.ca\/art\/artconservation.html<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\">Here are a few universities in the UK that offer graduate programs in English.<span>  <\/span>Be sure to contact the schools you are interested in to fully understand how the degrees correspond to those awarded in the US.<span>  <\/span>For example, in the UK, the \u201cfirst degree\u201d is the bachelor\u2019s and is a 3-year program.<span>  <\/span>Then, you would read for a graduate diploma, usually one year, and a post-graduate diploma after that.<span>  <\/span>Following that, the master\u2019s degree can be earned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\">West Dean College<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\">West Sussex, UK<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\">MA, Conservation Studies<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:Times;font-size:11pt\">Graduate and Post Graduate Diplomas in Books &amp;
