{"id":8964,"date":"2013-06-27T16:27:59","date_gmt":"2013-06-27T21:27:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.conservators-converse.org\/?p=8964"},"modified":"2013-06-27T16:27:59","modified_gmt":"2013-06-27T21:27:59","slug":"41st-annual-meeting-art-on-paper-discussion-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/resources.culturalheritage.org\/conservators-converse\/2013\/06\/27\/41st-annual-meeting-art-on-paper-discussion-group\/","title":{"rendered":"AIC&#039;s 41st Annual Meeting- Art on Paper Discussion Group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The inaugural meeting for this group took place on May 31, 2013 at the AIC Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, ID.\u00a0 Organized by Nancy Ash, Scott Homolka, Stephanie Lussier and Eliza Spaulding, the session presented the Draft Guidelines for Descriptive Terminology for Works of Art on Paper which is a project under way at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and supported by an IMLS 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century Museum Professionals Grant.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.conservators-converse.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/img1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8965\" alt=\"img1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.conservators-converse.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/img1-300x240.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/faic.wpenginepowered.com\/conservators-converse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2013\/06\/img1-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/faic.wpenginepowered.com\/conservators-converse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2013\/06\/img1-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/faic.wpenginepowered.com\/conservators-converse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2013\/06\/img1-1024x819.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/faic.wpenginepowered.com\/conservators-converse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2013\/06\/img1-1200x960.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/faic.wpenginepowered.com\/conservators-converse\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2013\/06\/img1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> We all probably face the same questions of how to describe a work of art in detail.\u00a0 For example, when do you call something a \u201ccolored print\u201d as opposed to a \u201cprint with color\u201d?\u00a0 We may have our own system for description which is internally consistent, but what happens when an object goes out on loan and the borrowing institution uses different language for its exhibit labels or publications or websites?\u00a0 Additionally, survey and collection management software often come with pre-populated databases that limit the options and can result in two similar artworks having very different exhibit labels.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The slides that were scrolling across the screen during the introduction were great examples of the dilemma.\u00a0 Two different collages demonstrated the issue of describing the pieces of a collage; one had artist-generated pieces, the other cut outs of printed papers such as magazines and newspapers.\u00a0 Would you feel the need to go to that level of detail if the two collages weren\u2019t next to each other inviting comparison?\u00a0 Does the purpose of the description (collection survey versus pre-loan condition assessment versus pre-treatment documentation) make a difference?\u00a0 The slideshow ended with a picture of a Harley Davidson motorcycle on exhibit and a shot of the label that said \u201cmixed media\u201d.\u00a0 While catch-all phrases can be handy, clearly they don\u2019t always work!<br \/>\nThe Terminology Guidelines propose systematic levels of information and rules of syntax to structure description including three \u201clevels of detail\u201d.<br \/>\nThe meeting conveners had put together a practical exercise for the audience as a \u201ctest-drive\u201d for their proposed system of terminology.\u00a0 Six different drawings were laid out on the chairs in the meeting room along with a list of questions.\u00a0 A group of people was assigned to each drawing with a moderator to facilitate the process.\u00a0 The questions were:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>How would you describe the drawing (using your \u201chome\u201d criteria)?<\/li>\n<li>Using the excerpts from the <i>Terminology Guidelines<\/i> provided, please modify your description accordingly.<\/li>\n<li>What immediate suggestions\/changes come to mind? Discuss.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The exercise inspired a lot of discussion and engagement from our group.\u00a0 We agreed, generally, on how to describe our drawing of rats, working through the list of media and then describing the artist\u2019s technique or manipulation (e.g. smudging).\u00a0 Our moderator prompted us with additional questions about level of detail and the order in which you might list things.\u00a0 One of the people in our group was a panel presenter from the general session.\u00a0 He was not a conservator but sat in for the sake of the experience and he noted that while we spent a lot of time describing the media and the technique, none of the conservators in the group considered mentioning the subject of the drawing- the rats!\u00a0 No surprise to us, but definitely a surprise to our guest.<br \/>\nAfter our allotted working time was up, each group presented their findings and feedback to the audience.\u00a0 The response was generally enthusiastic, but of course, there were more questions: How many colors do you describe?
