The research addresses the persistent challenge institutions face in balancing logistical, financial, and environmental considerations when couriering artworks and artifacts. While remote couriering gained rapid acceptance during the pandemic, bookend couriering remained less common, despite its potential benefits. Building on previous research, particularly a 2021 survey, the authors conducted a new survey in 2024 to better understand current attitudes and barriers to the broader adoption of this model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using mixed methods, the study analyzed responses from 128 museum professionals across various institutions and roles. The results revealed that although many pandemic-era adaptations remain in use, three primary barriers continue to inhibit the adoption of bookend couriers: difficulty locating trusted individuals in specific locations, lack of access to institutional courier training for independent professionals, and perceived administrative burdens. Nevertheless, both lenders and conservators in private practice expressed increased interest in using or serving as bookend couriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, the authors developed courier training workshops and are laying the groundwork for a centralized network to connect trained contract couriers with borrowing and lending institutions. These efforts are designed to address training gaps, build trust, and increase access to sustainable, specialized couriering options.
