Hiring Institution: Clyfford Still Museum Position: Assistant Paper Conservator Application Deadline: April 30, 2015 Start Date: July, 2015 Compensation: Commensurate with experience Status: Non-Exempt Reports to: Chief Conservator The Clyfford Still Museum is seeking a full-time paper conservator for what is currently expected to be a two-year term, with the possibility of an extension into a third year depending upon the needs of the Museum. The Museum houses approximately 2200 works on paper created by the artist Clyfford Still, ranging from graphite sketches to fully formed abstractions in oil on paper. Approximately one-third of the collection is oil pastel on construction paper. There may also be opportunities for conservation-related research using the Clyfford Still Archives, also housed in the Museum. The scope of this position will include a survey of the works on paper collection, prioritizing and conducting treatments, and helping develop effective preservation strategies for the works on paper collections, including archival materials. Ideal candidates are innovative, enthusiastic team players with strong critical thinking and applied problem solving and bench skills. General responsibilities include:
- Survey of the complete collection of works on paper
- Assessment and evaluation of works on paper
- Preparation of condition reports, treatment proposals, treatment records and other documentation of works on paper
- Prioritization and execution of conservation treatments of works on paper
- Matting and housing the works on paper collection
- Working with the Museum’s archivist to develop effective preservation strategies for the archival collections
- Other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time
Minimum Education, Job Qualifications and Experience
- The successful applicant will have graduated from an accredited conservation program specializing in works on paper and have a minimum of two years post-graduate experience
- The person must be able to work both independently and contribute as an effective member of the Collections team
- Strong written and verbal communications skills are a must
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel and Adobe Photoshop are a plus
- Commitment to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional team
