Job Summary
Reporting to the Head of Library Systems & Digital Collections Management, the Digital Library Assistant participates in the creation and maintenance of digital collections, working closely with staff in Digital Services, Special Collections Cataloging, Information Systems, and other Getty Research Institute units.  The scope of the GRI’s digitization program is both wide and deep: from scholar requests for digitization of individual items to multi-year mass digitization of collection materials to in-house driven reformatting for conservation.  The successful candidate will thrive in an environment with regularly shifting priorities and deadlines.  This is a full-time limited-term position until June 2017.
Major Job Responsibilities

  • Analyzes, extracts, and transforms existing cataloging data into usable metadata for digitized materials using Excel, existing Perl scripts, and XSL stylesheets
  • Processes images created by Digital Services using existing scripts and may create derivatives of digital video and audio as needed
  • Creates digital packages and deposits them into the digital preservation and access system
  • Completes deposit of non-book digitization on demand requests in a timely manner
  • Performs regular troubleshooting and quality control of metadata, filenames, and database functionality
  • Completes legacy metadata cleanup projects as needed, particularly in relation to a site-wide move to IIIF infrastructure
  • May work with born-digital materials and participate in discussions regarding their preservation and access
  • Maintains awareness of current trends and developments in the field
  • Applies knowledge of libraries and online records to assignments of complexity

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in art history or related discipline
  • Minimum 3-4 years’ experience in library or archive setting
  • Familiarity with digital repository functionality, digital preservation issues and metadata standards

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, discretion, and initiative
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and success working on collaborative projects
  • Comfortable working in an environment with regularly changing technologies and workflows
  • Tolerance for detail-oriented, high-volume, and, at times, repetitive work
  • Knowledge of data modeling, metadata schemas, and controlled vocabularies and thesauri preferred
  • Knowledge of archival and library descriptive practices helpful
  • Reading knowledge in at least one foreign language preferred
