ABSTRACT

We are now approaching 5 years into our Time-Based Media Art (TBMA) conservation project at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū (CAGTPoW). With the mantra, “doing something is better than nothing,” no additional resourcing, and a lot of help, we have managed to come a long way, but there is still plenty to do. Eliza will reflect on the progress and set-backs of the last 5 years and introduce the processes used at CAGTPoW for the TBMA collection, and incoming and outgoing loans. She will also discuss how being the first institution in Aotearoa New Zealand to attempt to apply TBMA conservation practice to their collection has been both tricky and helpful, and how, with Māori and Pasifika artists making up nearly a third of the TBMA artists in the collection, we have endeavoured to make space for tikanga. (Tikanga is a Māori concept incorporating practices and values from mātauranga Māori, Māori knowledge.)
