Conservation conducive colloids

Lisa Goldberg

Abstract

In recent years, colloids or gels have become popular as poultice media for conservation problems because of their high solvent to sorbant ratio. In industry, a wide variety of products are available to solve similar problems of thickening, scavenging, suspending and controlling rheology. This paper will discuss the behaviour of same of these materials under various conditions, and their manipulation by choice of polymer, solvent and additives. Examples will include removal of surface accretions and overpaint as well as localized electrolytic cleaning.
