Inhibitors and silver sulfidation

P. Andrew Lins

Abstract

Analysis of how common thiol tarnish inhibitors affect sulfidation of cast and of rolled fine silver, sterling silver and 800 silver (800Ag 200Cu), illustrated by  metallographic and SEM slides. Included in the analysis is a description of a low cost experimental chamber incorporating a permeation tube, of wider application in conservation testing. Problems of inhibitor failure are discussed with regard to the potential use of such inhibitors in the conservation of museum and other silver collections.
