Abstract
Looting of archaeological sites and the subsequent illicit trafficking in cultural property to satisfy market demands cause untold damage every year. This paper will discuss that damage and how conservators can help prevent it. Worldwide threats to heritage sites and actions taken by the State Department to protect them will also be examined. A discussion of the 1970 UNESCO convention and its impact will offer important background information.
