Abstract
The Warren Lasch Conservation Center (WLCC) at Clemson University in North Charleston, South Carolina has been the first to use a proprietary super-heated pressurized water system for the conservation of large metal objects such as cannons and architectural elements. This technology removes deteriorated coating layers and loose corrosion from metal artifacts and architectural elements as a part of their conservation treatment processes, including corrosion treatment and recoating. Collaboration with the Fort Sumter National Monument has resulted in the successful treatment of 14 cannons and numerous architectural elements at Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie to date. The forthcoming presentation will outline the development and implementation of the technologies utilized in our conservation process listed above.
