Abstract
The introduction of reasonably priced digital cameras has provided the conservation profession with a new documentation tool, which can be used for instantaneous acquisition of digital photomicrographs and quick interpretation of analytical results. Of recent interest is digital image analysis, a sophisticated computer software tool used to make rapid measurements of morphological features in photomicrographs. This paper will address some of the issues surrounding digital microscopy. It will also discuss applications of digital image analysis for documentation and measurement of morphological features of microscopic samples being explored at the Harpers Ferry Center (HFC).
